PAINT & COATING DEFORMULATION TESTING LABS
Avomeen’s expert scientific staff includes Ph.D. formulation chemists with decades of product development & deformulation experience with paints, varnishes and stripping agents. Reverse engineering paint products can be particularly challenging due to many products containing a large number of ingredients within their formulation, many of them at low levels. Isolating all of the resins, solvents, pigments, and additives with these products take highly tuned analytical instrumentation and advanced separation techniques.
Avomeen’s analytical chemistry labs have the ability to test a broad range of sample types by specialized Gas and Liquid Chromatography methods, along with a wide variety of Spectroscopic (MS, IR) and Microscopic (SEM, EDXA, Raman, Polarized) techniques. This expertise can be highly valuable when companies need to:
- Perform VOC analyses on new formulations
- Research and compare competitive products
- Identify specialty active ingredients and trace contaminants
- Develop new products, including eco-friendly product formulation
- Verify marketing claims
- Check if competitors are infringing on your companies patents
Avomeen can also provide custom Materials Identification & Quality Control services. We offer routine and custom physical testing of thermal and mechanical properties. Our techniques include Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDXA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA).

Case Study – Paint Deformulation
Industry: Paint Manufacturing
Problem: Manufacturer Keeping Formula from Company
Solution: A paint company was having difficulties working with their coatings manufacturer, who refused to release the details of the company’s product formula that they were responsible for producing. The company contacted Avomeen to identify and quantify all ingredients present in their manufactured product to confirm that the product specifications they were marketing and selling matched the product they were receiving from their manufacturer. Avomeen’s Ph.D. chemists were able to provide the company with a detailed deformulation report utilizing FT-IR, GC/MS, LC/MS, EDXA, and ICP instrumentation. The information that Avomeen provided also allowed the customer to search for a new possible manufacturer. The company solved their dispute with their manufacturer, allowing them to have another manufacturer formulate their product at a lower cost.
