What are Cosmeceuticals?

Cosmeceuticals is a marketing term for cosmetics products that have pharmaceutical-type ingredients included in its formulation or claims of medicinal properties.  These products are not required to go through the rigorous testing process that a pharmaceutical product does, but its safety and compliance with any advertising claims such as medical or drug-like benefits thought to be gained through their inclusion of biologically active ingredients must still be verified.

Products that are applied topically are called cosmeceuticals; if they are ingested orally they are called nurticosmetics.  The FDA does not currently recognize cosmeceuticals as a category.  To avoid bring regulated as a pharmaceutical, these products often times avoid making certain claims that would indicate that it has drug or drug-like properties.  How a cosmeceutical product is regulated, as a cosmetic product or as a drug is based on its claims.
